Steven
Courteney, Director of Wairarapa Geological Services (Limited)
and Technical Director of GeoProfessionals
Limited, has over 25 years international experience, predominately with European
independents. Since graduating with a BSc in Geology from the University
of Wales in 1977, he has travelled extensively in the oil and gas
industry and his assignments have included America, Argentina, Australia,
France, Germany, Indonesia and New Zealand. He has presented technical
papers at venues in America, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and New
Zealand, and was chairman of the Pertamina - IPA Oil & Gas Fields
Atlas Project for the final three years of the project. Steven has
specialised in the study of petroleum systems and the application
of sequence stratigraphy. During his career he has contributed directly
to the discovery of many fields and several billion barrels of oil
equivalent. Steven has very wide industry experience and has considerable
expertise in South East Asia, particularly in the basins of Indonesia
and surrounding countries, where he worked for many years in such
positions as Project Leader (Total Indonesie) and Technical Manager
(Enterprise Oil).

member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists since
1981 and Certified Petroleum Geologist since 1995. Country coordinator
and session chairman for the 2000 AAPG International Conference
and Exhibition.
Active member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists from 1980 until 1991 and reinstated in 1996.
Member
of the Indonesian Petroleum Association 1983 - 1992 and 1995 to
date:
- Co-ordinator of Exploration Papers for the Lecture Committee and Chairman of Exploration Judges of the 1986 and 1987 Annual Conventions. Senior Judge for the Exploration Best Paper Award at the 1988 and 1990 Annual Conventions.
- Chairman of the PERTAMINA - IPA Oil and Gas Fields Atlas Project from December 1987 until July 1991. During this period the complete set of six atlases covering some 385 fields was published. In addition to supervising the project also authored, or co-authored, many of the technical sections of the atlases.
- Chairman IPA Lecture Committee for the 1989 Convention and instigator of the first ever IPA poster sessions. Participant in the Technical Poster Session (as co-author of a regional seismic line across the Central Sumatra Basin).
Fellow of the Geological Society of London since 1983. Chartered Geologist since 1995 and participant in the Geological Society's continuing professional development (CPD) scheme.
Member of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain since 1994.
Associate Member of the Petroleum Exploration Association of New Zealand.
