Lesson concerning source sequences, seismic interpretation and application of the appropriate basin analogue.

This lesson concerns a detailed evaluation of the source potential of a block in the Central Sumatra Basin, Indonesia, by a major oil and gas company using both its own laboratory and that of a leading service company.

At the time of the study the basin could be described as 'mature' since:

  • 510 exploration wells had been drilled in the Central Sumatra Basin
  • 159 oil and gas fields had been discovered in the basin (only 27 of these were uncommercial)
  • Within the block 24 wells had been drilled (19 NFWs snd 5 appraisal)
  • A further NFW was drilled during the study
  • 6,787 kilometres of seismic data was available within the block
  • Numerous wells and a significant amount of seismic data had been acquired through data trades, tenders and unitisation negotiations
  • Four oil fields had been discovered in the block
  • A large volume of published data was available for the basin
  • At least two multi-client studies were also available
